FROM PATIENT TO PIONEER

John Duffield

The only technologist to survive back-to-back open-heart surgeries. AI became his lifeline. Two major surgeries. Twenty days. One voice for the future.

John is a patient, marketing technologist, speaker, and entrepreneur helping healthcare and hospitality companies reach their preferred tomorrows sooner. A trusted advisor to top brands like Novartis, Merck, Hilton, and Boeing, he connects AI, creativity, and immersive experiences to drive meaningful change.

After surviving two unexpected open-heart surgeries, John didn’t just recover — he rewired how patients engage with healthcare. Using AI at every step of his journey, from diagnosis and decision-making to recovery and resilience, he turned fear into focus, confusion into clarity, and complexity into confidence.

ONGOING WORK

Cardiovascular patient experience & innovation

What started as John’s own patient experience has grown into something larger: collaborating with patient support groups, advocacy organizations, and cardiac patients themselves — listening, documenting, and mapping what the journey actually feels like from the inside. The work centers on three questions:

Q1

Where does anxiety peak?

Waiting for test results, preparing for surgery, coming home — the moments where the clinical system goes quiet but the emotional weight is loudest.

Q2

What does “understanding” require?

There’s a meaningful gap between receiving medical information and truly comprehending what it means for your life — and something has to bridge it.

Q3

What can technology responsibly do?

Not a replacement for clinical care — a support layer between appointments that reduces fear, improves preparation, and gives patients a place to process.

THE FOREWORD

“John did what I wish every patient would do — he became a partner in his own care.”
